BASIS to launch corporate directory

BASIS Publications House Sdn Bhd will launch the fourth edition of Malaysia 1000, the country's top corporate directory, on October 21.

This business directory is a joint project of Basis Publications, a member of BASIS Group of Companies, and Bernama, the national news agency of Malaysia.

"We are happy to announce that Matrade (Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation) has decided to participate in the publication as an Institutional Partner," said BASIS Group chairman Tan Sri Abu Hassan Omar.

Malaysia 1000 provides access to comprehensive information on the cream of Malaysian companies in a wide range of corporate and industrial sectors, ranking them in terms of financial performance and listing the leaders of the respective sectors, in accordance with an organised format designed for fast and easy reference.

"The information published in the directory includes an index of the 1,000 top corporations and industrial classification, company turnover, profit before tax, tangible assets, shareholder funds, returns on capital employed and return on shareholder funds," he told a press conference at the Bernama headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.

The inaugural edition of Malaysia 1000 was launched by Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in 2003 while the second by Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in 2005 and the third by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Aug 8 last year.

Abu Hassan said Malaysia 1000 gave recognition to top corporate performers and their contribution to industries.

"It helps companies to benchmark their performance against their peers in the industry and also it can be as a marketing lead to attract new potential customers," he said.

The book would give a good picture on how well the companies respond to macroeconomic changes, particularly on the change of government policy and economic reforms, he said.

BASIS Publication managing director Zainoor Sulaiman said Malaysia 1000 would indirectly help increase the inflow of foreign direct investments into the country.

"It is a reference for those companies overseas that are looking to invest here or have joint ventures with local companies," he said.

In conjunction with the launch, 29 awards will be presented to the top corporate performers and industry leaders based on their turnover performance.
